Pulau Pangkor is an island off the coast of Perak in north-west peninsular Malaysia. It can be reached by ferry from Lumut (a coastal town, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Ipoh, the capital city of Perak). Ipoh is approximately 3 hours 20 minutes from Kuala Lumpur via North-South Expressway. It can also be reached via aeroplane, straight down to the island.
Besides from being one of the most visited tourist destinations in Malaysia, fishing and marine products are also major industries in the island. Dried seafood is a local speciality which can be bought at any of the shops or factories selling dried seafood on the island. The shops and factories are like all over the island.
Pulau Pangkor is notable for its beautiful golden-brown sandy beaches, green tropical rainforest and a mix of low budget to 5 star accommodations. The island have attractions such as the banana boats, kayaks and jet skis, available all day long. Since the water is shallow, Pulau Pangkor makes a perfect destination for snorkeling and scuba-diving too.
My family and I took the time to visit Galeri Pangkor (Pangkor Gallery) while we were there. Overlooking the jetty of Pulau Pangkor, this gallery-cum-museum features a brief display on local history and ancient artefacts dating back to the Stone Age found on the island.
