Details:

The Elephanta Caves are a network of sculpted caves located on Elephanta Island (Gharapuri), approximately 10km from Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The Hindu caves contain rock cut stone sculptures, dedicated to the Hindu god – Shiva.

To get to Elephanta Island, you can either take a boat from the Apollo Bunder Waterfront (near the Gateway of India, South Mumbai) or at a small jetty in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. In Vashi was where we took a boat to the Elephanta Island, which took about 45 minutes to get across. From the harbour / jetty of Elephanta Island, one needs to walk further inside to get to the historical sites and caves.  There’s also a toy train service from the jetty if you don’t feel like walking.
