Chennai, formerly known as Madras is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and its economy has a broad industrial base in the automobile, technology, computer, hardware manufacturing and healthcare industries. The Tamil film industry, popularly known as Kollywood, is also one of the largest film industries in India. The famous music composer, A. R. Rahman who took Chennai and India to international fame by winning two Oscars, two Grammy Awards for the movie Slumdog Millionaire in 2009 was born in Chennai. People of Chennai speak Tamil as it is the official language of Tamil Nadu.

Rajinikanth (born Shivaji Rao Gaekwad), the famous Kollywood superstar, lives at Ragaveera Avenue, Poes Garden, Chennai. His movies include Shivaji and Ethiran (Robot). And kudos to Rajinikanth, he was named by Forbes as the most influential Indian of the year 2010!

For textile shopping, do come to Pondy Bazaar. Formerly known as Soundra Pandy Bazaar is a market located on Thyagaraya Road, in T. Nagar, Chennai. At the eastern edge of Pondy Bazaar, near the Dr. Nair Road intersection, the popular Pelita Nasi Kandar, a branch of this international chain of Malaysian food restaurants, can be found.
