Details:

The Ajanta Caves which have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, are located near Jalgaon town, in the state of Maharashtra, India. The caves are a network of 30 rock-cut cave monuments dating from the 2nd century BCE. Cave 9, 10, 19, 26 and 29 are chaitya-grihas and the rest are monasteries.

Paintings and sculptures considered to be masterpieces of both Buddhist religious art furnish the interior of the caves. All paintings were executed on a ground of mud-plaster in the tempera technique and they shows heavy religious influence and centre around Buddha, Bodhisattvas, incidents from the life of Buddha and the Jatakas.
