Bandung Town – Located 190km from Jakarta, Bandung is the 3rd largest city in Indonesia and is suffering from a major traffic pollution. The introduction of this city can be read here from my previous travel to Bandung back in 2007.

Places that we went to while in Bandung:

Shopping: Pasar Baru where you can shop stuff like fabrics (laces, cotton, silk etc), shoes, clothes, praying attires, praying mats and even foodstuff (crackers, biscuits, candies, sweets, etc) at low prices. Rumah Mode Factory Outlet where you can shop for branded’ items like Zara, Victoria’s Secret, Lacoste, Elle at marked-down prices. The place is beautifully set with cafes, restaurants, fountains, palm trees, as if you are shopping in a small holiday resort. While you are here, do try out the funny-tasting durian coffee and banana fritters with cheese at one of their cafes. Paris van Jaya is perhaps the best and largest shopping mall in Bandung. Here is where you can find lots of either local or international foods and up-market fashion brands like Zara, Lacoste, Adidas, Mark & Spencer, Guess. It also has a supermarket and Carrefour, cineplex, and ice skating rinks. Sidewalk cafes  like Starbuck’s, Richeese, KFC, etc. are located on the top floor. If you fancy cheap denim clothing, the Chihampelas Street or better known as the Jeans Street is worth a visit. It is a popular place to score some new jeans in Bandung. The street itself is very busy with traffic congestions all day round. The ‘attraction’ lies in the huge statues of all-time favourite superheroes and cartoon characters like Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Rambo, SpongeBob that adorn the fronts of the shops. Each character for each shop.

Culture & HeritageSaung Angklung Udjo is one of the must-sees while in Bandung. It is one–stop cultural workshop, consists of a performance venue, a bamboo handicraft centre, a souvenir shop and a bamboo instrument workshop. Apart from that, it functions as an educational laboratory and training centre to preserve the Sundanese culture – Angklung in particular. An angklung is a music instrument made of bamboo and historically was used in Sundanese religious ritual functions. The angklung is played by swaying and shaking it by hand. The word ‘angklung’ was originated from Sundanese “angkleung-angkleungan”, which means the movement of angklung player and the sound “klung” that comes from the instrument.  UNESCO designated the angklung a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on November 18, 2010. Good things in life come in small packages. The hugely talented small kids of Saung Angklung Udjo were simply amazing, you should come here and see for yourself! The place was established by a talented art teacher names Udjo Ngalagena and his wife Uum Sumiati in 1966 due to his strong passion and love for art and culture. He passed away in 2001 but passion is being continued by his daughters and sons. Located at Jalan Padasuka, about 40 minutes from Bandung city, the place is open to visitors from 15:30 hours until 17:30 pm, with the entrance fee of INR 100,000 per person. Besides getting the entrance ticket, you’ll get a brochure / catalog, a necklace with an angklung pendant, and a bottle of soft drink. During the show the visitors can get to try playing the angklung themselves. And guess what, the kids even played ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ using angklung so perfectly and they got themselves a huge round of applause they so well deserved from the audience.

Food & Cuisines: Restaurant Sederhana chain offers great quality and authentic ‘nasi padang’ in the country. One of its restaurant in Bandung can be found located next to Rumah Mode Factory Outlet.  Kampung Daun Culture Gallery & Café, located at the northern part of Bandung city is designed as a ‘kampung’ or small village that sits in a lush valley with a stream running past the various bales in which guests eat. The menu at Kampung Daun is a mix of Indonesian and Western food. On our last day in Bandung and before we left for Bandung’s International Airport, we dropped by at Kartika Sari Café (bakery and cake) to shop for some desserts to bring home. Here, they serve a large variety of delicious homemade cookies, cakes and chocolates. They even pack your goods in boxes (cargo ready) for free. Recommended to try & buy are their bagelan, almond brownies, pisang bolen coklat keju and Bingka Ambon.
